The Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1)came out of Sunday’s game with a 12 to 6 victory in a tough defensive battle with the St. Louis Rams . The young Steelers’ defense came through when it counted with the help of an old veteran.
Let’s take a look at the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Sunday’s victory…
The Steelers won their first game with offense. However, the defense was a big factor in their win against the Rams. Veteran safety Will Allen contributed 7 tackles and a key interception that set up the Steelers final field goal in the final minutes of the game. With a defense as young and inexperienced as the Steelers, it’s nice that Allen stepped up and lead by example.
One of those up and coming young defensive players is defensive end Stephon Tuitt who had 6 tackles and a sack . Tuitt now has 2.5 sacks for the year and a two game sack streak. He is becoming a defensive force in just his second season. Linebacker Lawrence Timmons was back to his steady self with 7 tackles . Linebacker Arthur Moats had two tackles including a sack.
Wide Receiver Antonio Brown was once again the key to the Steelers offense catching 11 passes for 108 yards. Brown is just a phenomenal player that has proven time and time again he can’t be stopped.
Running back Le’Veon Bell made his season debut and did not disappoint, collecting 132 yards from scrimmage, 62 yards rushing with a rushing touchdown and 7 catches for 70 receiving yards.
The bottom line here is the Steelers were able to pull out a tough road win and their young defense showed improvement and came through when needed.
The Steelers gave up 5 sacks to the Rams defense including one that resulted in QB Ben Roethlisberger‘s injury. Although the Rams have a stout defensive front the Steelers must do a better job protecting their quarterback . The Steelers offense also had too many penalties that help stall drives. The Steelers need to score touchdowns when in the red zone but had to settle too often for feild goals in this game.
The hit that resulted in the Ben Roethlisberger injury was ugly and border line illegal . Roethlisberger will now miss game time in the coming weeks with the only silver lining being the results could have been much uglier.
