Darrius Heyward-Bey came to the Steelers in 2014 as a free agent . He has made most of his living as a Steeler on Special teams and as a 4th receiver option.
However, that was not always the case for Heyward Bey.
Originally drafted in the 1st round by the Oakland Raiders with the 7th overall pick of the 2009 draft, Bey was a starting wide receiver for the Raiders. In fact he has 65 NFL starts during his career.
Heyward-Bey’s best season, was in 2011 when he had 64 receptions for 975 yards, a 15.2 yard average per catch and 4 touchdowns.
He also has top end speed running the 40 yard dash in 4.3 so he is always a deep threat.
Now Darrius Heyward-Bey 28, and a seasoned vet will be asked to step up and take on a bigger role for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With the 4 game suspension of second year receiver Martavis Bryant, Heyward-Bey is the next man up.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger recently spoke on the situation …
Ben Roethlisberger: “He works his butt off every day,he never complains. He never gripes. He goes about his job, and it’s grimy, running down on special teams, punts, kickoffs. He’s a former first-rounder. He doesn’t say ‘Woe is me’ and worry about ‘I used to be this, used to be that.’ He does everything he can to coach the young guys and work with me as much as he can.”
“I knew it(the suspension) was coming, so we’ve been working with Darrius Heyward-Bey, he is playing with a lot of confidence. We have confidence in him. He is one of the guys that went down to Georgia with us to work out. We’ve built that confidence and trust in each other. I think he will step up and we will be just fine.”
Heyward-Bey has been one of the hardest working players on the team since joining the Steelers, willing to do anything to contribute to the team and build chemistry with his quarterback…
Darrius Heyward-Bey: “It lets me know and lets everyone else know that it was earned, it wasn’t given, I think we have a good relationship. I just listen to what he(Roethlisberger) tells me to do. I think that is always a good thing to do. Over time with Ben you have to make him be confident in you. You have to make plays for him. When he tries to trick everybody, you have to make sure you are on top of your game. I feel confident out there and I am glad he is too.
“I have to make plays for him because now it’s real, it’s game time.”
September 10th things begin getting real for the Steelers and Darrius Heyward-Bey as he becomes the next man up.
