The two most controversial Steelers of the past week were among the very few bright spots in the Steelers 43-19 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Quarterback Michael Vick, who joined the Steelers just days before the game and practiced barely 2 full practices with the team completed 4 of 5 passes for 106 yards in limited action.
Vick’s very first play as a Steeler was a 63 yard pass to wide receiver Martavis Bryant .
Bryant , who is facing a possible 4 game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy had 3 catches for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Punter Jordan Berry also had a good day punting 4 times for an eye-opening 58.3 yard average , a 50 yard net average and a long of 78 yards. Berry also did a good job filling in on kickoffs for injured kicker .Garrett Hartley(hamstring). Hartley left in the first half and was unable to return.
The Steelers defense struggled most of the day giving up a whopping 542 total offensive yards and 43 points to a Bills offense who had a depleted backfield missing several starting weapons .
Coach Mike Tomlin spoke about his displeasure with the performance after the game…
Mike Tomlin:“It was obviously not the outcome we were looking for. Usually I reserve judgment until we watch the tape, but it doesn’t require a lot of tape-study to analyze some of the things that were issues in that performance. We continue to be slow-starters, and that’s disturbing. We’ve got to address that. That’s one of the things that we acknowledged in there after the game. Some of our young guys who pushed through this game, who are quite frankly fighting for jobs, did not execute without enough detail to be in consideration. And that’s disappointing. As we push towards the end of this thing, I’d like to see guys with their arrows pointed up; fighting for jobs. Some of those guys looked like they were just walking dead. We’ve got to analyze that, and keep those committed to fighting. Some of that stuff was quite disturbing; not the type of performance we’re looking for. After a performance like that, you analyze every element of it; not only from a player’s standpoint, but also from a coach’s standpoint. I just think that’s appropriate, and we’ll do that.”
The Steelers loss in a very disappointing fashion giving up big play after big play on defense and the injuries continue to pile up.
On a positive note, at least its the preseason and the Steelers still have some time to right the ship.
