Mike Tomlin:“In a lot of ways, this is like a mock in-season week for us, or at least that’s the way we are presenting information to the guys. From a planning standpoint, it doesn’t fully represent the in-season work we put it, but we do want to represent the process.”
“I’ve spoken lot about the singular focus that is easy to be gained at Saint Vincent College, and the great continuity and comfort we have there, a lot of intangible values come from guys sitting around telling stories at 10 or 11 p.m. It’s a beautiful thing. As we get back here, however, it’s more like the season. We get our work done, and guys get in their cars and go their separate ways. I want to see how they respond to that change, individually and collectively. It’s always a big part of this stage of the journey.”
“In some instances I’m very direct in terms of what I expect from them from their down-time and their time away from the building, but largely I want to see how they handle it as well.”
“We have significant battles happening on special teams, our punters are going back and forth and that will be fun to watch. We have to continue to take a look at a number of coverage guys and guys who have an opportunity to state a case for themselves. The strongest statements they can make for themselves in these next few weeks is probably in the special teams game. For those reasons, I’m excited about watching them play.”
Notes of the game…
<> The Steelers are expected to play a lot of their starters for at least a half.
<> Back up Quarterback Michael Vick will be a game time decision depending on how fast he can get a handle of the offense.
<> DE Stephon Tuitt (ankle) is ruled out of Saturdays game.
<> Lawrence Timmons (toe) and Vince Williams (hamstring), safety Ross Ventrone (ankle), safety Mike Mitchell (ankle), and cornerback Cortez Allen all have a chance to see some action.
Who to watch in tonight’s Game…
<> Center Cody Wallace should see plenty of action with the first team in his bid to fill in for C Maurkice Pouncey. It should be interesting to see how he holds up.
<> QB Michael Vick and C/G Doug Legersky will probably see their first action since joining the Steelers earlier this week.
<>WR Darrius Heyward-Bey should have a bigger role in the offense this season , now that Martavis Bryant is likely going to miss the first 4 games of 2015. Heyward- Bey may see extended time with the first team.
<> The Steelers defense had 6 sacks last week, let’s see if outside linebackers Jarvis Jones and Bud Dupree can keep that momentum going.
<> The Steelers punting competition is heating up, as both Brad Wing and Jordan Berry have both had good showings this preseason. Who will move ahead in Saturday’s matchup?
<>RB Josh Harris has missed some playing time this preseason with injuries. Expect him to get some carries as the Steelers want to get a good look at him in the game.
<> CB Kevin Fogg and CB BW Webb are in a tight battle for a roster spot. Both need to show some big play ability in these last preseason games.
