News & Notes: Steelers Training Camp 2015, Day 2

sns2Steeler Nation, the Steelers took to the fields of Latrobe for the first time in camp 2015, as they held their first practice open to the public. Lets take a look at the news and notes of the day…

<> The Pittsburgh Steelers celebrated 50 years at St. Vincent College in Latrobe P.A. with some special ceremonies for fans before practice that included Steelers players from each decade … Jon Kolb (drafted in 1969), J.T. Thomas (1970s), Louis Lipps (1980s), Merril Hoge (1990s), and Charlie Batch (2000s).

Pittsburgh native and finalist on NBC’s The Voice Chris Jamison sang the National Anthem just before the kickoff of practice.

<> Veterans LB James Harrison and S Will Allen were both held out of practice.

Mike Tomlin: “I’m going to protect him (James Harrison) from himself. He and Will Allen are too old to be working right now.”

<> Head Coach Mike Tomlin spoke after practice…

Mike Tomlin:“It was a good start today. No real injuries to speak of, just general good hustle and enthusiasm. Obviously we’re not perfect. We’re not going to be. It’s a good base to begin. We’ll continue to do similar things in terms of how we structure our work and compete. We do it hard and in a professional manner. That’s what we’re seeking. We have a lot of young guys out there. We’re challenging and evaluating them, but we’re teaching them at the same time. I thought they did a good job of receiving the message and instruction.”

<> RB DeAngelo Williams started practice, with Le’Veon Bell taking the first few reps off.

Josh Harris &  Dri Archer also saw some playing time.

<> With back up left tackle Mike Adams out for at least the next 4 weeks, that opens the door for LT Alejandro Villanueva. Villanueva spoke about his added reps and opportunity ….

Alejandro Villanueva: it’s totally different when you come from a bottom of the depth chart, third-string guy, to a second-string guy because the coaches give you a lot more attention. For me right now, I’m in a position where I just need to keep working hard, listen to my coaches and teammates and absorb everything that I have around me so I can make the best of my situation.

<>Third string QB Landry Jones continues to struggle throwing back to back interceptions during practice with the second team.

<> QB Ben Roethlisberger told Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette  the offense hopes to score 30 points a game in 2015…

Ben Roethlisberger: “We want to start fast and we want to be able to put 30 points on the board in every game”

He also said this may be his best offensive line and offense of his career…

Ben Roethlisberger: “That group in front of me is as good as any in the league, and as good as any I’ve ever had. It’s great”

“Then you look at outside receiver. AB is as good as anybody in this league and arguably one of the greatest that I’ve played with. Just all around on offense, we have just a special group. It has a chance to be really good.
