The second day of the NFL Draft is now in the books and the Pittsburgh Steelers have made their third round pick .
The Steelers chose wide receiver Sammie Coates out of Auburn in round 3 with the 87th overall pick.
Sammie Coates 6-1, 212 caught 34 passes for 741 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2014. His biggest game of the season came in the Iron Bowl against Alabama when he caught 5 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns .
He ended his college career with a 19 game reception streak and a career total of 82 receptions for 1757 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Coates runs a 4.43 40 yard dash and is also strong, bench pressing 225 pounds 23 times. He also has a vertical jump of 41 inches and broad jump of 10 feet 11 inches.
Sammie Coates can be a deep threat and is also a strong blocker in the running game.
Steelers wide receiver coach Richard Mann spoke about Coates after the pick…
Richard Mann: “I think we got a guy that needs some work, but is a great athlete, he has good speed and can take the top off of the coverage. He’s a guy who can track the ball down field very well.
I think the sky is the limit for him, he’ll run with the ball. Also we think the ‘Z’ receiver has to be a guy who will catch and run with it. He will put his pads down and run with good pad level. A lot of guys won’t do that. We’ve seen him do it, so we know he has it in him.”
The Steelers have had great luck in the past in the third round with receivers and they are hoping that Sammie Coates continues that trend.
