The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a busy day today, preparing for the official start of the 2015 NFL league year and free agency that kicks off March 10th.
The Steelers began the day by announcing the signing of outside linebacker Arthur Moats to a new three year deal. Moats played in 16 games for the Steelers in 2014 starting in 10. He collected four sacks ,23 tackles (17 solo), six quarterback hits, four tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
He first joined the Steelers last season via free agency after being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 6th round of the 2010 NFL draft.
The Steelers also re-signed veteran tight end Matt Spaeth to a 2-year contract. Spaeth was a Steelers third-round pick (77th overall) out of Minnesota in 2007.
He has a career total of 53 catches for 410 yards and 10 touchdowns during his 8 seasons in the NFL. Spaeth had this to say on the signing…
Matt Spaeth: “I think of Pittsburgh as home now, this organization is the best in the world, and I am just happy to be back.”
The Steelers also announced some sad news as they released long time veteran and Steelers fan favorite defensive end Brett “Da Beard” Keisel. Keisel ended the 2014 season on the injured reserve list after tearing a tricep muscle in November.
He had a career total of 30 regular season sacks, , seven forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and two interceptions. He returned one interception for 79 yards for a touchdown. He also had 36 pass breakups.
Brett Keisel was a key member of the Pittsburgh Steelers helping bring two Super Bowl championships to Pittsburgh during his 13 seasons for the team.
GM Kevin Colbert spoke today on the subject…
Kevin Colbert : We have informed Brett Keisel that we plan to release him today. We have had conversations with Brett over the past couple of weeks during which we communicated our intentions to him. Brett has played a major role in our success during his 13 years in Pittsburgh. We appreciate his efforts and we are grateful for what he helped us accomplish, including two Super Bowl Championships. We will always consider him an all-time Pittsburgh Steeler.
The Steelers also made one-year contract offers to CB Antwon Blake, S Robert Golden and TE/FB Will Johnson, three of their restricted free agents today . The offers give the Steelers the right to match any other teams offer. The players now can sign the one year tender or try to negotiate a long term deal.
