The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Baltimore At Steelers 2014

SNSGBUSteeler Nation, what a night! Not only did the Steelers retire All Time great Mean Joe Greene‘s number but the Pittsburgh Steelers faced off with the Baltimore Ravens in a pivotal divisional match-up.When the smoke cleared, the Steelers came out of the game with an impressive 43-23 victory.

The Steelers’ defense played a very physical game in classic “Mean Joe” style and Ben Roethlisberger and the offense went off for another 6 touchdowns!

Let’s take a look at the Good, the Bad & the Ugly of the Steelers 43-23 win Sunday night over the Baltimore Ravens.

The Good:

The Steelers are playing their best football in some time. QB Ben Roethlisberger played another phenomenal game completing 25-37 passes for 340 yards and 6 touchdowns. He became the first ever NFL quarterback to pass for 12 touchdowns in a two game span. Roethlisberger is playing at an elite level and is now in the talk for NFL MVP.

WR Antonio Brown continued to amaze leading the team with 11 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown. WR Markus Wheaton caught 2 catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Rookie WR Martavis Bryant had 3 catches for 44 yards and two touchdowns.Bryant has become the Steelers X factor.TE Matt Spaeth caught a late 33 yard touchdown pass.

The Steelers running game was stifled most of the night but RB Le’Veon Bell did contribute in the receiving game catching 5 passes for 38 yards and a touchdown .Bell has great hands for a running back and his receiving skills out of the backfield are a great safety valve for Roethlisberger and the offense.

On defense the Steelers played a very physical game and it all started with the play of OLB James Harrison.Harrison was in top form looking like a blast from the past. He set the tone with 4 QB hits and two quarterback sacks

OLB Arthur Moats had a sack and forced a fumble. CB Brice McCain recovered the fumble and returned it 27 yards. OLB Jason Worilds had a key interception and  ILB Lawrence Timmons had 11 combined tackles and a sack .

The bottom line is the Steelers have been  a scoring machine on offense and have been pressuring opposing QB and forcing key turnovers on defense. All this adds up to a winning formula.

The Bad:

The one bad thing that we can take away from Sunday nights victory was the Steelers lack of a consistent running game. The Steelers ran the ball 25 times for a total of 55 yards and a meek 2.2 yard average. In most instances this would spell doom for an offense but the Steelers passing game is playing at such a high level that the lack of a running game was not a factor. The Steelers must do a better job of running the ball in the future none the less.

The Ugly:

Injuries on the Steelers defense continue to pile up. S Troy Polamalu (knee) LB Ryan Shazier (ankle) and S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring) may be out for the next couple of games minimum. With Polamalu and Thomas hurting the Steelers defense becomes desperately thin  at the safety position and things could get ugly if the injuries linger.
