Steeler Nation, the Steelers are now 3-3 after losing to the Cleveland Browns last week and the winds of change could be in the air come Monday night with a home game against the Houston Texans in prime-time.
Lets take a look at some Steelers News & Notes going into this weeks game.
<> Friday’s Steelers injury report : DE Cameron Heyward (ankle) Full Practice, FB Will Johnson (Illness) Limited Practice ,DE Brett Keisel (Knee) Limited Practice, NT Steve McLendon (Knee) Out, S Mike Mitchell (Knee) Limited Practice,LB Ryan Shazier (Knee) Limited Practice,CB Ike Taylor (Forearm) Out, S Shamarko Thomas (Hamstring) did not practice.
<> The Steelers have benched CB Cortez Allen after a bad game against the Browns. CB Brice McCain formerly of the Houston Texans will start in Allen’s spot Monday night, while Allen is still expected to see action in certain defensive packages.
<> Rookies DE Stephon Tuitt and WR Martavis Bryant are expected to see more playing time Monday night. Rookie NT Daniel McCullers may also see some playing time for the first time this regular season due to the injury to starting NT Steve McLendon.
<>The Steelers are searching for answers in the red-zone and hope WR Martavis Bryant may provide a spark.
<> Wide Receiver Markus Wheaton is coming off a rough showing against the Browns. This week he took steps to fix those problems by seeking out QB Ben Roethlisberger to go over film together. Roethlisberger spoke on the subject earlier this week…
QB Ben Roethlisberger: Yeah there are some things that we ironed out. Markus came in early this morning and came in our quarterback room and we watched more film together. I think that speak volumes about him wanting to get in there, wanting to learn (and) to be corrected. I broke down every single pass play that he did and told him what I expected (and) what I thought he did right or wrong. He’s the type of guy that’s going to take that and make him better. I have all the confidence in the world that Markus will come out and be better than ever.
<> Offensive coordinator Todd Haley spoke about WR Martavis Bryant chance to see playing time…
Offensive coordinator Todd Haley :“Like I said last week, he is a guy that has been working hard to try to get a helmet on Sunday. We will see. So far, so good. There have been some ups and downs but it’s a little different when you aren’t on cards (running scout team), because you have to start thinking more a little bit. But he has done a good job. He is working hard. He is studying. He made some plays today. We will see as the week goes on.”
<> Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau spoke about rookies DE Stephon Tuitt and NT Daniel McCullers possibly seeing increased playing time…
Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau: “He’s(DE Stephon Tuitt) a young player. He’s got great raw material, tremendous size, he’s got really outstanding athletic ability. He’s going to be a good player, you can write that down. I think you have to give all these young players a chance to grow. He’s making progress. He’s going to be seeing more action obviously because of the process of necessity, but he’s going to be a good player.
We’ve had a lot of young players contribute for us on the defensive line. We were pretty fortunate there for a lot of years that we had Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel. There wasn’t anybody going to step in that alignment too much. But we had young guys that came along, got ready to play (and) got ready to play fast. I think that anybody that has the raw material these guys have, Dan (McCullers) has got the size and strength (and) Tuitt has the athletic ability. They’re going to be able to contribute and they have to start right now.”
Tweets of the week…
@steelers sign DE Ethan Hemer, DB Jordan Sullen & OL Adam Gettis to PS; release WR Derek Moye & place CB Shaq Richardson on PS/IR List.
Is it any wonder
#Steelers have just 9 sacks? They ask their best, Worilds, to cover, not rush QB as often http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2014/10/16/Worilds-is-forced-to-cover-not-rush/stories/201410160212 …
Steelers LB J. Worilds on covering receivers: “They do it, knowing they’re taking me out of position to make plays.” http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2014/10/16/Worilds-is-forced-to-cover-not-rush/stories/20141016021
Haley said that the book is out on Steelers in red zone –man outside and 8 in box. That’s why they are looking at Martavis Bryant this week
Tomlin on 6-foot-4 WR Martavis Bryant as a red zone option vs. Houston: “We’ll explore the possibility of utilizing him.”
Jets claimed Wesley Johnson off waivers on Monday. Not good news for the
@Steelers. He will be a player, IMO.
Todd Haley said he calls about 73 percent of the plays and Ben has called about 27 percent thru six games.
