As expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed ten players to fill their practice squad. The practice squad was raised from eight to ten players this year, giving each team two extra spots for players. The Steelers reduced their roster down to 53 men on Saturday, but signed a number of them back onto the practice squad today.
Here is a look at the ten players:
The Steelers signed wide receivers C.J. Goodwin and Derek Moye, offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva, defensive backs Shaquille Richardson and Ross Ventrone, defensive linemen Josh Mauro and Nick Williams, running back Josh Harris, tight end Rob Blanchflower and linebacker Howard Jones.
If you remember, Moye made the roster last season but did not dress in most of the games. Richardson was a fifth round pick in 2014 but injuries made him sit out more than the Steelers would have liked. Jones recovered two fumbles and helped the Steelers get a win in the second preseason game against the Bills. Williams has suffered from a number of injuries since being drafted in the seventh round of 2013, but being on the practice squad gives him a chance to learn the playbook for another year. Ventrone has shown a lot of upside in the last two preseasons, but has yet to do enough to make the roster.
Occasionally, the Steelers will activate a player from the practice squad onto the active roster due to injuries, making more spaces for the Steelers to add to the practice squad. We will see how the season unfolds in just one short week.
