The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: Preseason Bills at Steelers

SNSGBUSteeler Nation, the Steelers are now 1-1 in the preseason after defeating the Buffalo Bills 19-16.The Steelers starters played most of the first half and had success. Lets take a look at the Good, the Bad  & the Ugly of the Steelers 19-16 victory over the Bills.

The Good:

To call rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier’s Steelers debut good is a bit of an understatement. Shazier had a great first showing ,totaling 11 tackles , 2 of those on special teams and an interception he returned 27 yards to set up a Steelers touchdown. If that was not impressive enough, add in the fact that Shazier did all of this while playing just a little over a quarter and a half.

Ryan Shazier was a tackling machine and shows great ability to become all the Steelers had hoped for when taking him in the first round of this years draft.

Shazier was not the only Steelers linebacker to have a good night. Linebacker Terence Garvin had 7 tackles , including a sack. The Steelers linebackers as a unit had a strong night.

On offense quarterback Ben Roethlisberger also had a great night completing 8-of-11 for 128 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers. Roethlisberger had a QB rating of 150.8  Roethlisberger has looked really good all summer with crisp accurate passes. He and wide receiver Antonio Brown both seemed to have picked up where they left off last season. Brown had a touchdown catch and run  of 76 yards, finishing up with 2 catches for 93 yards in limited action.

The Steelers starters looked good in limited action playing most of the first half.

The Bad:

Back up quarterback Landry Jones continued to struggle. Jones has not looked good so far in preseason action. Jones completed 2 of 5 passes for 53 yards with an interception and a fumble that set up a Bills touchdown. Jones must step up his play. He has shown very little improvement.

Kicker Shaun Suisham missed an extra point and the Steelers special teams as a whole could of had a better night giving up a 42 yard kick return on the opening kick off. Punter Brad Wing also continued his inconsistent ways with bad punts at bad times. Wing has to become more consistent.

The Ugly:

The Steelers have very little depth at a few positions. The drop off after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was ugly. The Steelers second and third team offensive line also leaves a lot to be desired. After the Steelers top five starting offensive lineman there seems to be very little starter capable talent and that trend continued in the game against the Bills. The Steelers cornerbacks after the starters also seems thin. During these last couple preseason games players at these positions must prove themselves capable , otherwise one injury and things could get real ugly.
