Steelers Sean Spence Makes Remarkable Comeback

052913-NFL-Pittsburgh-Steelers-Sean-Spence-PI-BR_20130529151527454_660_320Two long painful years of uncertainty where erased Saturday night in New York as inside linebacker Sean Spence took his first steps back on to an NFL playing field.Spence last took the field as a rookie in the 2012 preseason, going down with a horrific knee injury he suffered in the final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

This was not your run of the mill knee injury. Spence severely damaged his left knee tearing the anterior collateral and lateral collateral ligaments while also dislocating his knee cap and damaging the peroneal nerve. The peroneal nerve controls movement down to the foot and could not be repaired . Spence’s only chance was that the nerve would heal on its own,a rarity in most cases. Spence would be lucky just to be able to walk normally again let alone play in the NFL .

Two long years of sweat and tears, two years of perseverance and hard work have finally paid off.

Sean Spence took the field as the starting inside linebacker of the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday night and he did not disappoint, roaming the field like a man on a mission.

Spence not only played but he played well, showing no ill effects from his knee injury pressuring Giants quarterback Eli Manning and making three tackles in limited action.

Spence showed all the skills that the Steelers had hoped for when they drafted him in the third round in 2012.

Spence spoke  after the game …

Sean Spence: “Words can’t really explain it, emotions were running very high. It’s a blessing to be back on the field, with my teammates, doing what I love.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers stood behind Spence while he rehabbed his knee for two seasons. This in itself is a rarity in the business that is called the NFL.

Sean Spence fought against all odds and has beat them with his triumph return. He is a testament to anyone who is facing long odds, to keep the faith ,that anything is possible with hard work and determination.

Many times we hear that the preseason games are meaningless,  Sean Spence and the Steelers will beg to differ.

Thanks for the inspiration Sean Spence … Mission Accomplished!
