News & Notes : Steelers Training Camp Day 8

sns2The NFL has officially kicked off  it’s season as the NFL Hall of Fame game in Canton Ohio was played Sunday. The Pittsburgh Steelers spent their Sunday in Latrobe Pa. participating in their 5th practice in a row and 8th overall. Lets now take a look at some news and notes from training camp day 8.

<> Players of note that did not practice Sunday were NT Steve McLendon,QB Ben Roethlisberger ,and S Troy Polamalu. All received a veterans’ day off and should return Monday.TE Heath Miller and Rookie CB Shaquille Richardson(Groin) returned to practice.

<> The Steelers spent the day working Red Zone drills and once again rookie wide receiver Martvis Bryant shined in red zone situations.If  Bryant can continue to show his value in the red zone ,he may see some real playing time during the regular season.

<> Running backs Dri Archer and Tauren Poole both had big runs in Sunday’s practice.

<> With QB Ben Roethlisberger having the day off third string QB Landry Jones saw some first team reps. Jones has had an up and down camp with many reports saying he is holding onto the ball way to long. He needs to have a good preseason showing.

<>WR Justin Brown continues to have a good camp despite breaking his nose. Brown had another solid practice and even had a leaping touchdown grab.

<> Tackle Mike Adams has not had a good camp and has been getting beat in position drills a lot. Adams must step it up soon or he may have trouble making this team.

<> Linebacker Ryan Shazier  left late in practice with a right knee injury and had it wrapped and iced after practice. Head Coach Mike Tomlin categorized the injury as a “boo boo”.  It does not appear to be serious.

Initial depth chart seems to indicate Justin Brown is No. 4 WR. This week. Here are the notables:

Practice for started on the turf, but it’s moving to the grass for competition periods.

This is new: a receiver/DB Oklahoma drill. One WR blocking for another between 2 dummies; a DB trying to make the tackle

Daniel McCullers gets an atta guy from Mike Tomlin after overpowering Chris Elkins in pass protection drill.

Looks like Ben has the day off but he’s apparently OK.

Play of the Day: Dri Archer turned a toss-right into a cutback scamper for 40-plus yards in the 11-on-11 tackling period. Beep-beep speed.
