Training Camp has been going on for just about a week and the Steelers don’t have too much longer before they will suit up to play the New York Giants on August 9th for the team’s first preseason game. Therefore, every practice and every repetition is important. Lets see what happened at camp on Thursday.
<> NFL officials attended practice. Prior to Thursday’s practice, the Steelers practiced without referees, and according to radio host Tunch Ilkin, the laundry was on the field! The Steelers are learning the right way to play the game within the rules and the help comes from the officials.
<> Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media after practice concluded on Thursday. “It was another good day’s work, very similar to the work that we did yesterday and probably very similar to the work that we’re going to do tomorrow,” said Tomlin. “We’re finding our rhythm in this thing and trying to develop consistency with our techniques and so forth, which are appropriate, but I like the energy and enthusiasm.”
<> Injuries are beginning to pile up as camp rolls on and they have impacted the tight ends perhaps the most. Heading into Thursday, Rob Blanchflower (foot), Michael Palmer (unknown), and Matt Speath (unknown) were all a scratch for practice. Undrafted free agent Eric Waters, who has impressed so far, got hurt Thursday with a back injury. Cornerback Ike Taylor was seen wearing a wrap around his left leg but practiced in full. Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey sustained a neck/back injury after diving to the ground and did not return.
<> Running back Le’Veon Bell returned to practice in pads after missing with what the team explained as a tight hamstring. Bell participated very little after individual drills for safety measures.
<> According to Alan Robinson of Trib Live, the Steelers have been using safety Shamarko Thomas in a variety of ways so he can be on the field with fellow safeties Troy Polamalu and Mike Mitchell. Thomas has leveled a couple offensive players according to Robinson.
<> Safety Jordan Dangerfield had an interception in 7-on-7 drills and almost recorded another later in practice.
<> Linebacker’s coach Keith Butler hinted the Steelers will be moving their linebackers around. “We’re going to move them around a little bit. We’ve got some talented guys there, and we’re going to use them as much as we can and put them in position to be successful,” Butler said. “We’ve got some speed, and we’re trying to utilize it as best we can.”
