Steeler Nation, the first weekend of training camp 2014 is now in the books! Mother nature cut Sunday’s practice short but there was still plenty of action. Lets take a look at the news & notes from day 2 of Steelers training camp.
<> As stated above practice would be cut short Sunday when thunder storms took over the fields of Chuck Noll Field in Latrobe. Coach Mike Tomlin spoke on the subject after practice…
Coach Mike Tomlin:“We got a bulk of the work in before the weather shut us down,” said Tomlin. “We’re not really going to lose a lot of sleep over that. There will be plenty of opportunities for these guys to get better and prove themselves. I like the work we were able to get done out there in a lot of facets.
“Technology is an asset to us today, with Doppler, and people have it on phones and so forth, it paints a pretty clear picture, not only in terms of what the structure of the storms looks like and how big they are, but how far they are away. It’s a big time tool for us. It’d be interesting to see how they did it 40, 50 years ago.”
<> Injuries seem to be piling up just a bit, fortunately nothing deemed too serious. The biggest scare came toward the end of practice, when starting running back Le’Veon Bell left the field with what is said to be a “tight hamstring”. He is not expected to miss much time if any, but will continued to be evaluated.
Other injuries of note Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed reserve offensive lineman David Snow has a fractured foot that requires surgery. Rookie wide receiver Martavis Bryant did not practice with a groin injury. C.J Goodwin a reserve wide receiver left with a shoulder injury.Safety Mike Mitchell(groin) and running back Alvester Alexander(groin) remain on the PUP list.
<> WR/RB Dri Archer , WR Markus Wheaton and WR Justin Brown continue to impress in the first two days of camp. It will be interesting to see what happens when they practice in pads Monday.
<> Offensive lineman Mike Adams spent some time at practice Sunday at right tackle Sunday. He has now practiced at both left and right tackle during the first two days of camp.
<> Punter Brad Wing has shown great hang time so far in camp with a few of his punts reaching beyond 5 seconds . The Steelers need a reliable punter and Wing will get his chance.
<> Offensive lineman Chris Hubbard took first team reps at guard replacing Ramon Foster during his time off.Cody Wallace seen action in this spot Saturday. Ramon Foster is expected back Monday.
<> Rookie linebacker Jordan Zumwalt continues to see action at both inside and outside linebacker. Position flexibility will be a plus in his chances of making the team.
Tweets of the Day:
Quote of the Day: “We’ll probably get a better assessment of his contributions tomorrow, when we tackle.” _ Tomlin on RB LeGarrette Blount
Dri Archer tops at camp so far. But let’s wait until pads and he’s doing it against the varsity. Mostly all reps have been against 3rd team.
Roethlisberger and Brown working on red zone throws while rest of team works special teams
Justin Brown catching everything again today.
No. 1 guy on PR is Dri Archer. Feeling is he will be able to field the punts well enough to win the job.
