Today, was the first day of the Steelers’ “phase one” off-season workouts .The Pittsburgh Steelers also took the opportunity to announce that they have picked up the fifth-year option on defensive end Cam Heyward contract.
As part of the rookie wage scale that is a part of the current CBA, all draft picks are required to sign four-year contracts, and for No. 1 picks, a fifth-year option can be applied by the team.
The Steelers had until May 3 to exercise this option and Cam Heyward is now signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers through the 2015 season.
Heyward was a spot player through his first two seasons,serving in a back-up role, but had a breakout season in 2013 his third, starting 13 games , 63 total tackles, five sacks, five passes defensed, and 31 QB pressures making him the Steelers top defensive lineman statistically.
