Steeler Nation , it looks as though all the speculation on what will happen to outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley has come to an end. Reports have surfaced that the Steelers have informed Woodley that he will be released as soon as Tuesday March 11th the official kick off of free agency.and the NFL’s new calendar year.
The writing was on the wall ,starting last week when the Steelers placed the transition tag on outside linebacker Jason Worilds that guarantees Worilds $9.754 million for the 2014 season . The younger Worilds (26) had a break-out season in 2013 recording 8 sacks.
LaMarr Woodley was drafted by the Steelers in the second round (46th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. Woodley recorded 52.0 career sacks during the regular season the most by a Steelers’ player in their first six seasons and signed a big $61.5 million, six-year contract extension on August 5, 2011.
Woodley will be 30 next season and has been prone to injuries the past three seasons.
His salary cap hit for 2014 was set to be $13.59 million . Now with the release the hit is reduced to $5.6 million and $8.5 million against the 2015 cap. The Steelers designated Woodley a June 2 release so his cap savings wont kick in till that date.
