Steeler Nation, in the 2013 draft the Pittsburgh Steelers had a choice to make and in the 2nd round,48th overall pick they chose Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell.
The debate at the time was would they choose the highly touted Alabama running back Eddie Lacy who was still available. Lacy was considered by many the best back in the nation in 2012 and many were surprised he was still available in the second round when the Steelers were up to make their selection.
The Steelers chose Bell ,stating later that Lacy had a foot operation that concerned them. Lacy would end up being drafted in the second round with the 61st overall pick by the Green Bay Packers.
Le’Veon Bell came into camp and impressed early on and there was little doubt he was the best back on the Steelers roster. Bell would be hampered by a knee and Lisfranc injury most of the summer and not start the 2013 season until the fourth game.
Le’Veon Bell has shown great potential in his first 11 games with the ability to both run and catch the football. Bell has 646 yards rushing for a 3.3 yard average with 6 touchdowns behind a patch work offensive line most of the season. Bell also has 43 catches for 388 yards for a total of 1038 yards from scrimmage.
Eddie Lacy has played in 13 games and has rushed for 1028 yards and a 4.1 yard average with 8 touchdowns. Lacy also has 31 catches for 236 yards for a total of 1264 yards from scrimmage.
Coach Mike Tomlin spoke at his weekly press conference about having to choose between the two running backs and had this to say about the choice …
Tomlin:“It was an easy decision for me.Obviously, Lacy’s a top-quality back, but probably it’s a matter of preference — just like I’m sure Cincinnati went through the same discussions and thoughts when they took Giovani Bernard in front of both of them.”
The Steelers and the Packers face off Sunday. Le’Veon Bell and Eddie Lacy will face off for the first time and make no mistake ,each will be trying to prove their team made the right choice.
