Roethlisberger And The Steelers Are Confident In Cody Wallace

Cody WallaceWhen it comes to the Steelers and their offensive line you get the feeling that if it was not for bad luck they would have no luck at all. The Steelers are heading into game thirteen of the 2013 season and are now starting their third center. Center/guard Cody Wallace will be making his first start at center for the Steelers against the Dolphins.

When center Maurkice Pouncey went down with a season ending knee injury in the season opener the Steelers found free agent Fernando Velasco and after a crash course in the offense Velasco exceeded expectations and even became one of the leaders of the young offensive line.

Velasco went down with a season ending injury last week against the Ravens and now the Steelers find themselves in much the same predicament as when the season began.

One big difference this time around is unlike Fernando Velasco ,Cody Wallace knows the Steelers system. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger spoke today on Cody Wallace and his confidence in his new center…

Roethlisberger:“On the plane home from Baltimore, when I knew Fernando (Velasco) was out, I checked with the other linemen, asked them what they thought about Cody (Wallace),” Roethlisberger said. “Every single person said the same thing, that he’s a really smart player, there will be no issue, he’ll be good to go. So when I talked to him I got that same confidence, that he’ll be ready to rock with it.”

Veteran guard Ramon Foster also spoke about Cody Wallace and his familiarity with the Steelers system…

Foster: “He’s been behind Maurkice, he’s been behind Fernando, also, he knows the system, that’s the most important thing. You don’t have a new guy coming in. You have a guy who knows the system and the plays. That’s the only thing we’re worried about, but he’s good.

“There’s expectation, definitely. He’s worked his butt off whether he’s been doing scout team and everything like that. He knows what’s in front of him. I respect his work ethic. I’m just ready to see him go on Sunday.”

So it looks as though Mike Wallace won’t be the only Wallace the Steelers and Steeler Nation will have a close watch on Sunday. Cody Wallace is the next man up and the Steelers seem to feel he is more than capable. Sunday we shall see.
