The Good,The Bad & The Ugly Lions At Steelers

SNSGBUSteeler Nation, the Steelers are now 4-6 after an impressive 37- 27 victory over the Detroit Lions. It was a total team victory and the Steelers offense finally took off. Let’s take a look at the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the game.

The Good:

The Steelers played their best game of the season as a team. Let’s start with the offense. Ben Roethlisberger completed 29 of 45 for 367 and 4  touchdowns. Roethlisberger was on his game and played at an elite level finishing with a quarterback rating of 119.4.

Wide receiver Antonio Brown continued to be on fire recording 7 catches for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns. Brown and Roethlisberger have shown great chemistry all season and it showed up big time in this game.

On defense , Jason Worilds may have had his best game as a Steeler. Worilds had 7 tackles ,a sack and 4 QB hurries. Worlids was playing in LaMarr Woodley’s spot and looked very comfortable at that position. Cam Heyward was a disruptive force collecting 6 tackles and batting down 2 passes. Heyward has played at a high level since taking over as the starter. Safety Will Allen didn’t miss a beat returning into action, collecting a team high 9 tackles and a key interception late in the game to help seal the victory.

The defense as a whole after a shaky first half ,shout down the Lions completely in the second half . The Steelers defense held Lion QB Matthew Stafford to only 3 completions out of 16 attempts for 35 total passing yards in the second half of the game. Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson never had a catch in the second half. This was no small feat to say the least and was a huge part of the victory.

On Special teams ,Shaun Suisham connected on all 3 of his field goal attempts (25,34,21) . The Special teams unit was also key in stopping a fake field goal by the Lions,a play that may have been the turning point.

The Bad:

The Steelers defense in the first half ,especially in the second quarter gave up big plays to Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Stafford had  327 yards passing and two touchdowns just the first half of the game . Johnson had 6 catches for 179 and two touchdowns.  The defense did redeem itself in the second half but that first half was plenty bad.

The Ugly:

The Steelers continue to fail to get any push from the offensive line in the running game. The running game was stagnate rushing 27 times for only 40 yards for a meager 1.5 yards a carry. That kind of effort won’t get it done moving forward. The weather will be getting colder and the Steelers must be able to move the ball on the ground as the elements and field conditions become more of a factor.

The Steelers offense has to do a better job in the red zone, failing to score a touchdown after having first and goal was ugly and has to improve. The bottom line is the Steelers offensive line must do a whole lot better run blocking.
