Cam Heyward was drafted in the first round of the 2011 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since joining the Steelers he has seen limited playing time, recording 26 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his first two season.
Coming into his third season, Heyward has been in a rotation playing behind 2009 first round pick DE Ziggy Hood. So far this season , Heyward has out played Hood despite considerably less playing time.
Cam Heyward was named the new starter this week by Mike Tomlin.
Heyward has played in 115 defensive plays this season recording 7 QB hurries , 1 QB hit, and 2 pass deflections . His 7 QB hurries is second on the team behind only LaMarr Woodley with 8.
In comparison Hood has played in 187 defensive plays , has 6 QB hurries, 0 QB hits , and 0 pass deflections.
Look for Heyward’s playing time to be extended and Hood to take on a lesser role. Coach Mike Tomlin spoke Tuesday on the decision to start Heyward over Hood…
Tomlin:“He will play more and deservedly so,” said Tomlin of Heyward. “He has played really solid. Not taking anything away from Ziggy, both guys will continue to play. We just want Cam to play more than he has been playing and in order to to insure that we are going to put him in the starting lineup.”
Cameron Heyward is now in his third season . This is usually a time where things start to click for young defensive ends in the Steelers system. Here are some quotes taken from a report from the beginning of training camp this July on TribLive.com by Ralph N. Paulk
Heyward:“It’s hard to define my role right now, but we’ll see as the season rolls around,” Heyward said. “I have to be a player on this team who contributes in multiple ways. It doesn’t matter if it’s special teams or defensive line.
“I have the athletic ability, so it’s a matter of putting technique and ability together,” Heyward said. “Then, I have to transfer that onto the field.
Steeler Nation, it looks like Cam Heyward has followed through on these training camp quotes and the Steelers are about to give him his shot . Cam Heyward’s time is now.
