Steeler Nation, we all know by now that the Steelers have lost Pro Bowl center and offensive line leader Maurkice Pouncey for the rest of the 2013 season. We also know that Kelvin Beachum the Steelers all around swing man came in and did a great job under tough circumstances filling in at center. Beachum has very little experience at the center position and is also counted on as depth at multiple positions guard/tackle/center and even a little tight end. So you can see Kelvin Beachum is a valuable commodity at many positions.
The Steelers picked up former Tennessee Titan center/guard Fernando Velasco earlier this week. Velasco started 13 games at center last season and according to Pro Football Focus ranked 11th among NFL centers in 2012 not giving up a single sack.
The question is will Fernando Velasco have enough time to get familiar enough with the Steelers offense and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger before Monday night’s matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals or should they go with the inexperienced Kelvin Beachum at center another week ?
Velasco is confident he will be a quick study and has said a lot of the blocking schemes are similar to what he dealt with in Tennessee only some changes in terminology . Velasco also said players such as Ramon Foster have been a big help in teaching him the different terminology and the ins and outs of the offense.
So Steeler Nation who would you start … Beachum or Velasco ? We will find out in the next couple days what the Steelers plans are.
