Steeler Nation, Happy Labor Day! It’s the first day of week one of the 2013 regular season and the Steelers held their first practice . Though a lot of working America had today off the Steelers players, coaches and even the front office had a busy day. Let’s take a look at news and notes.
The Steelers front office continued to work even after Saturday’s cut down date and Sunday’s practice squad moves. Today the Steelers announced the signing of punter Zoltan Mesko and release punter Drew Butler. The Steelers also made another move signing cornerback Antwon Blake and releasing cornerback Isaiah Green.
Mesko is considered an upgrade.Mesko played three seasons with the New England Patriots had a 44.2 gross avg, with a 39.5 net avg. Mesko is 27.
Blake played for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season and lead the team in special team tackles with 12 tackles, an asset the Steelers could really use.
The Steelers also name this seasons’ team captains today.
The Steelers named 4 captains, Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and center Maurkice Pouncey on offense . Defensive end Brett Keisel and Safety Ryan Clark on defense.
Roethlisberger has been named a captain 5 of the last 6 seasons . Keisel is captain for a second straight season . Pouncey and Clark are captains for the very first time.
On the injury front running back Le’Veon Bell told reporters that he is out of the walking boot and has been jogging.
Running back Isaac Redman says he is ready for week one and could have played during the last two pre-season games if he needed to.
Linebacker Jarvis Jones returned to practice after taking last week off (chest sprain). Jones says he pretty much did everything and that it felt good to be back.
Fullback Will Johnson did not practice (hamstring) and at this time is questionable for Sundays game
