The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: Steelers Vs.Carolina

SNSGBUSteeler Nation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have now finished up the 2013 preseason losing the final game 25-10 to the Carolina Panthers. The Steelers starters played little to none with quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Bruce Gradkowski seeing no playing time.

Lets take a look at the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the game….

The Good:

Lets start out by saying the pre-season coming to an end may have been the best thing to happen. I don’t know about you but I’m ready for some real regular season football.

The play of wide receiver Derek Moye was among the good Thursday night. Moye caught two passes for 55 yards and continued to make a push for the Steelers to keep a fifth receiver spot open for him. However maybe the most impressive play Moye made was running down cornerback Josh Norman after a 70-yard interception return that kept him from scoring a touchdown. Moye showed great heart, hustle and determination. This play may have helped Moye make the final roster.

Running back Felix Jones has made the most of his short time playing for the Steelers. He had a good game rushing 14 times for 56 yards and had two catches for 9 yards.Jones showed flashes of the talent that made him a first round pick by the Cowboys in 2008 . Add the fact that Jones is an asset on special teams as a possible returner and I think Felix Jones makes this team.

Tight end David Paulson continues to show up in the receiving game. Paulson had a good game with 4 catches for 44 yards and a 13 yard touchdown . He is beginning to develop into a very good receiving tight end and with some improvement on his blocking could be something special in the future.

Linebacker Chris Carter also had a good game . He had 3 tackles 2 sacks and a forced fumble. Carter may have helped himself grab a spot on the 53 man roster with this performance.

The Bad :

The Steelers special teams once again gave up points as kick returner Reggie Dunn took a safety after back tracking and getting tackled in the end-zone.The Steelers special teams have given up a slew of points this pre-season . Special teams coach Danny Smith has to get this special teams unit up to par fast or its going to be a long season for the Steelers and a short stay for Smith.

Cornerback Curtis Brown got torched by Carolina wide receiver Ted Ginn. Ginn had 5 catches for 149 yards and two touchdown. Brown was not responsible for giving up all those big plays but he was a big part of most of them. Brown needs to step up his game soon . This season is a make or break season for Brown. He can not continue to just be a good special teams player.

The second half play of quarterback Landry Jones was bad, real bad. Jones began the game well with a nice 13 yard touchdown pass to Paulson and had a pretty decent first half passing for 10 of 20 ,133 yards and a touchdown and 0 interceptions. Jones’ second half play however, was terrible. Jones thew 3 interceptions and ended up 16 of 35 for 189 with 1 TD and a low QB rating of 36.5

The Ugly :

Lets make this short and sweet the 2013 pre-season record of 0-4 was ugly to witness . Let’s just be thankful its over ,none of the losses count and the regular season is on it’s way. Let the games begin!!!
