Steelers Head coach Mike Tomlin held his weekly press conference this week for the final pre-season game. Among the information that he passed along was the fact that rookie quarterback Landry Jones will get the bulk of the work in the game against the Carolina Panthers.
Here is an excerpt from the Tomlin press conference on the subject…
Tomlin: “(It’s) just letting him play football and seeing how he rides the wave associated with good plays and bad plays and series, things that you don’t get a chance to see often from young guys,” said Tomlin. “We’ll get a real extended view of him and see how he responds to how the flow of the game goes. It’s a great opportunity for him. We’re excited about it and I’m sure he is as well.”
So it looks like the Steelers will get an extended look at their rookie quarterback on Thursday night. It should be interesting to see how Jones handles himself with the extra playing time . Jones has gone 14 of 31 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown in limited playing action the first two pre-season .
Jones was taken in the 4th round (115th pick overall) by the Steelers in the 2013 draft. Landry Jones played for the University of Oklahoma where he threw 123 TDs, 52 interceptions and had a career average QB rating of 141.5 as a Sooner.
After a slow start in the pre-season Jones is now becoming more comfortable with his new team and surroundings .Jones had this to say to Steelers.com / Teresa Varley
Jones: “It’s just night and day,” said Jones. “Just being here and being around the guys and learning the offense, I think it’s just a total difference in how I feel. I feel a lot more comfortable now than I did at the beginning of training camp, just from a reps aspect. I’m getting a lot more reps and I’m able to practice more.”
“I just have to play up to my capabilities this week,” said Jones. “I am excited about the opportunity to get out there and play more. I am looking forward to playing a lot. I have been getting a series here, a series there or a quarter or so. It’s just different coming in at the middle of the third quarter. So I am just looking forward to playing a lot.”
Steeler Nation it’s the last pre-season game of the season and many starters won’t be playing but don’t forget there are always interesting things to watch even in the last preseason game. Landry Jones will get to show what he is capable of given the chance to lead his team the majority of a game. Its early in his development and this is just a small step but it should be interesting none the less.
