Steeler Nation, another training camp has came and went. The Steelers finished their 48th training camp at Saint Vincent College today. Coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers began the foundation for the 2013 Pittsburgh Steelers on the fields of Saint Vincent. The process does not end with the end of camp as the Steelers will return to Pittsburgh’s South side to their normal practice facilities and finish the rest of the process during the remaining pre-season games. Here are some news and notes from the final 2013 practice at Saint Vincent.
The Steelers practiced without pads today and running backs Isaac Redman and Le’Veon Bell both practiced and have not been ruled out of Monday nights game.
Some other good injury news was defensive backs Curtis Brown, Cortez Allen and rookie Terry Hawthorne all participated in practice.
Coach Mike Tomlin says all healthy bodies will play against Washington. Expect the starters to play about a quarter. Some offensive line starters may see extended playing time depending on the player and circumstance.
LaRod Stephens-Howling is expected to see some kick return duties Monday night.
Markus Wheaton is expected to receive punt returns during the game.
Running back Jonathan Dwyer is expected to see a lot of action with Redman and Bell being banged up. It will be interesting to see if Dwyer takes advantage of this opportunity.
Offensive guard Kelvin Beachum is expected to see his first game action at center. Beachum has seen some practice time at center but never in a game.
An interesting note from the Bob Pompeani show on KDKA 93.7 The Fan. Safety Ryan Clark had this to say about the Mike Wallace Markus Wheaton comparison …
Clark :“Markus Wheaton is better than Michael Wallace at everything but one thing: speed,” Clark said. Clark added that it’s not a knock on Wallace, but he thinks Wheaton is ready to step in and play.
That is some high praise for rookie WR Markus Wheaton from Clark. It looks like Wheaton may have a bright future ahead of him.
