Steeler Nation earlier this off-season we did a story on Steve McLendon preparing for greatness . Well it seems he is willing to back up his words with a variety of training methods. In a story posted on steelers.com /Teresa Varley McLendon discusses an array of training methods he has participated in this off-season to better many aspects of his game this season.
McLendon has been training with Chip Smith from CES Performance in Atlanta using a variety of sports training to prepare for this season. McLendon talks about taking batting practice in baseball batting cages to improve his hand- eye coordination.
He has used basketball training to help with his explosiveness coming out of his stance .
McLendon has worked with karate to help improve his discipline and swimming to open up his lungs ,improving his cardio and breathing.
McLendon does not stop there ,the big man( 6-4 300) has taken ballet and is liking the benefits of the workout. Here are a couple of quotes on the benefits of ballet from the interview…
McLendon:“It helps you strengthen the muscles in your toes, your feet and ankles, calves, knees, quad and hamstring,” said McLendon. “It’s full body. It’s extremely hard. I have seen a lot of greats do it. If those greats did it, if I want to be great I have to do a lot of the things they did. That’s how I picked up on ballet.
McLendon: “Once I tried it, I liked it. I liked how it felt. You can see it on the field. You are doing so much it helps with preventing injuries. I did it my senior year in college and saw the difference and thought it’s time to get back in to it. Most people don’t look at a guy my size taking ballet, but if you want to achieve greatness, you will do whatever it takes to be great.”
Steeler Nation it looks like Steve McLendon is serious about wanting to be great and is willing to put in the extra work to achieve his goals.
