The Road to Redemption Leads Plaxico Burress back to the Start

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Plaxico Burress in the first round out of Michigan State in the 2000 NFL draft. After some successful seasons in Pittsburgh, he felt he wanted to move on to bigger and better things. Burress signed with the New York Giants in March 2005. The Depth on the Offensive Line

Over the past few seasons, the Steelers have been unable to maintain five solid offensive lineman. Much of this has to due with continuous injuries to guys like former guard/tackle Willie Colon. Last season, the Steelers also struggled to keep a right tackle healthy. In 2013, the Steelers look to have their luck changed. The feel around Pittsburgh is that they are quite happy with their five expected starters in Marcus Gilbert, Ramon Foster, Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro, and Mike Adams. A starting offensive line with an average age of 24. Behind those five, are major questions. What depth do the Steelers have? Who can back up these five? Who is Eligible For Steelers Practice Squad?

practice squad

The rules of eligibility for the practice squad on an NFL football team can be quite complex, so I will do my best to break it down. We know that each team is restricted to a 53-man roster, meaning they can not have more than that number of players on their active roster. Then a team goes down to a 46-man active game day roster, where 8 players on the active roster will not dress for a game. A team is privileged with a practice squad that consists of no more than 8 players. A grand total of 61 players on the roster not counting your reserved/injured players throughout the length of the season. Continue reading Who is Eligible For Steelers Practice Squad?

The Long Road to 53: Nik Embernate

As news around Pittsburgh starts to slow down, I start to dig deep into the Steelers’ roster. Many players know that their chances to make an NFL roster are slim and they will do anything it takes for a team to take a peek their way. The Steelers will have to release 37 players by time of the regular season to cut back from their 90-man preseason roster to a 53-man regular season roster. So I decided to create a series of posts you will see through the summer and training camp on Steelers N Stuff called “The Long Road to 53” to show how difficult it will be for some of these players to make the cut, but also do not count them out. They are the underdogs at training camp. Just like undrafted free agent Willie Parker was in 2004 or Ramon Foster in 2009. We start with Nik Embernate. Steelers N Stuff Camp Breakdown: Wide Receivers

He was in the same coaching staff as head coach Mike Tomlin when they both served as assistant coaches from 2002-2005. Richard Mann has 28 years of NFL coaching experience and in 2013, he is the new wide receivers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh will be Mann’s seventh team he has coached wide receivers for in the National Football League since 1982. From western Pennsylvania, Mann is a former Aliquippa Fighting Quip (high school with 700 combined victories and 15 WPIAL championships). Mike Ditka, Ty Law, and Darrelle Revis are also “Quips.” Continue reading Steelers N Stuff Camp Breakdown: Wide Receivers
