I am sure you know by now that right tackle Mike Adams was stabbed early Saturday morning and is expected to make full recovery within six weeks. Pittsburgh police have made two arrests and charged two men from the incident already. While Adams is recovering, the Steelers have Kevin Beachum filling in at right tackle.
Beachum, the new swing man, was working at center last week but has yet to master snapping the football. Beachum’s work at center has been put on hold for now at least.
Beachum was the 248th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the black and gold. He started five games in his rookie season due to injuries at right tackle. Beachum was a four year starting left tackle for Southern Methodist University. The second-year swing man was a three-time All-Conference USA selection, earning first team honors during his final two years as a Mustang. As a senior, Beachum was selected to both the Lombardi Award and Outland Award watch lists.
Before practice started, there was concern whether who will take over for Adams. Was it going to be Beachum or Guy Whimper, who was signed as a free agent over the offseason.
There are two days left of practice this week and three days of mandatory minicamp next week. Will Beachum and Whimper rotate so Beachum can continue to work on his development at center?
If you are wondering about Doug Legursky, he has a workout with the Buffalo Bills today. The Steelers look to be parted ways with their former swing man and that job is now Beachum’s for the taking. Now he has to execute.
